Trip cost calculator
Approximate the all-in cost of a driving trip. Pick the country, enter the distance and rental days, and we ballpark fuel, tolls, rental, insurance, and IDP. Country unit rates are 2026 averages — treat the result as a budgeting tool, not a quote.

Country notes
- Expressway tolls are high — ¥2,000–¥3,000 per 100 km is typical.
- ETC discount available for tolled drives, ~30% off peak; rentals can include an ETC card.
- Compact / kei cars are widely available and rent for ¥5,000–¥6,000/day.
How the numbers are built
- Fuel: distance ÷ average rental-class fuel economy × current retail fuel price.
- Tolls: distance × toll fraction × country-average cost per 100 km on expressways. Japanese tolls are highest (~¥2,400/100 km); most western US states have no tolls at all.
- Rental: economy-class daily rate at off-airport pickup. Airport pickup adds 10–20% in taxes + fees in most countries.
- Insurance: optional CDW/LDW daily rate. Many credit cards include rental car coverage — check before paying for CDW twice.
- IDP: the home-country issuing fee (AAA, JAF, etc.) converted to destination currency for comparison.
What this doesn\'t include
- Parking, fines, lodging — outside scope of a driving cost calculator.
