The route
California State Route 1 — colloquially the Pacific Coast Highway or PCH — runs roughly 1,000 km from the Mendocino redwood coast in the north to the Mexican border south of San Diego, hugging the Pacific for most of its length. It is the most photographed road in the United States and the canonical American overland experience for foreign visitors.
The most famous section is Big Sur — about 150 km between Carmel and Cambria — where the road clings to cliffs above the Pacific with no parallel highway alternative. Landslides and washouts have closed sections multiple times in recent years; Caltrans maintains the road but the geology is challenging. Always check Caltrans QuickMap (quickmap.dot.ca.gov) the morning of any Big Sur drive.
We recommend the route in 7 days: SF → Half Moon Bay → Santa Cruz → Monterey → Big Sur (overnight at Ragged Point or Cambria) → San Luis Obispo → Santa Barbara → Malibu → Long Beach → San Diego. Faster trips compress to 4 days but skip almost all the worthwhile stops.
Driving south is the convention because the southbound lane runs along the ocean cliff edge for most of the Big Sur section. Northbound puts you on the inside lane, with less of the view but easier overtaking.
Highlights
- San Francisco → Pacifica → Half Moon Bay — start with the suburban coast before committing to the long drive.
- 17-Mile Drive (Monterey peninsula) — private toll road; lone cypress, Pebble Beach.
- Big Sur — Bixby Bridge, McWay Falls (Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park), Nepenthe restaurant.
- Hearst Castle (San Simeon) — Gilded-Age compound; tour-only access.
- Morro Bay — distinctive volcanic plug rising from the harbour.
- Santa Barbara — Mediterranean climate, mission, classic California pier.
- Malibu / Pacific Palisades — celebrity coast; LA traffic eventually wins.
Vehicle notes
Any rental works. The Big Sur section is winding, narrow, and occasionally closed due to landslides — check Caltrans QuickMap before driving Highway 1 between Carmel and Cambria.

- Best general window. Wildflowers in Big Sur, mild temperatures, less marine fog than summer.
- Jul–Aug
- Marine layer / fog can blanket the Big Sur coast for days. Cooler than inland but visibility variable.
- Sep–Oct
- Often the clearest weather; pleasant temperatures; off-peak crowds.
- Nov–Mar
- Winter storms; landslide season. Big Sur road closures most likely. Check Caltrans QuickMap.
Practical notes
- Speed limits: 65 mph on US-101 between San Francisco and Salinas; 55 mph on most of Highway 1; 25–35 mph in Big Sur villages and curve sections.
- Fuel: long stretches without stations in Big Sur — top up at Carmel or Cambria depending on direction.
- Cell coverage: drops in Big Sur for ~80 km. Download offline maps.
- Toll bridges: Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge use electronic tolling; rental car companies bill the renter.
- Wildlife: elk in northern PCH; sea otters, elephant seals on the central coast (Piedras Blancas viewing area).
- Landslides: Big Sur road closures are common; check quickmap.dot.ca.gov before driving.
